Auckland Transport Adopts HPE GreenLake for Advanced Analytics to Promote Public Safety

AI-enhanced video feed manages traffic flow, deters violations and crimes in real time for Auckland Transport on HPE GreenLake Platform

AUCKLAND, New Zealand, April 05, 2022–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Hewlett Packard Enterprise (NYSE: HPE) today announced that Auckland Transport has selected the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform to deliver AI-enhanced video streaming to optimize transport routes, promote public transport and to support decision-making for law enforcement.

Transport in Auckland is responsible for area transportation services, including roads, trails, public transportation and parking. Its day-to-day activities keep Auckland’s transport systems moving and work to solve traffic congestion, encourage more people to use public transport and keep citizens safe on roads and in public spaces. .

Previously, Auckland Transport used 2,500 cameras to monitor the city for security issues, creating an ever-increasing amount of data. Auckland Transport was using aging technology and the ongoing costs of maintenance and outsourced management of the platform were significant. The large system was complex, difficult to upgrade, and nearing end of life.

Auckland Transport needed a cost-effective solution that would improve productivity and automation, while encouraging more people to use public transport which had been significantly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We use data to convert people to public transport. We know how long it takes to get from point A to point B by car and we let people know that they can drive there twice faster by bus,” said Roger Jones, Executive Managing Director, Business Technology for Auckland Transport.

Auckland Transport moved its Video Management System (VMS) to the Qumulo file data platform on an HPE Apollo 4200 Gen10 server running on the HPE GreenLake edge-to-cloud platform, resulting in a reduction in 41% of rack space – from 68 rack units across three racks to 40 rack units across two racks, HPE GreenLake Management Services monitors and operates its VMS.

With a VMS two-thirds the size of the original footprint, Auckland Transport achieved a 37% decrease in power consumption and power and cooling costs, without compromising the system’s ability to handle unstructured data in the exabyte domain.

The modern, unified solution allows Auckland Transport to avoid upfront IT costs and allows customers to pay only for what is used, while a single, intuitive dashboard reports real-time transport flow, consumption and congestion rate, as well as compute and storage trends. This data is essential for forecasting and planning to allow people to move seamlessly and safely in the city of Auckland.

Additionally, the new solution enables Auckland Transport to increase the use of its cameras, making the work of parking attendants more effective and efficient.

“We are excited to work with Auckland Transport and deliver a unified, cost-effective solution that uses AI to keep people safe and support their mobility,” said Colin Henderson, Managing Director, Hewlett Packard Enterprise NZ.

“This is a perfect example of the combined power of HPE solutions with Qumulo. Our carefully selected configurations are optimized for price, performance, and capacity requirements to deliver unstructured file data at scale and unparalleled performance,” said Ben Gitenstein, Vice President of Product at Qumulo.
